Tohru's personality, simply put, is that she's just genuinely really sweet and nice. This is evident right from the start when we meet her as she explains her reasons for currently living in a tent. Her mother recently died and she had been sent to live with her grandfather. Shortly after, he decided to have some remodeling done on his house so that his daughter and her family could move in with him as well. Tohru assured him that she had a friend she could stay with in the meantime. She had been lying though. Tohru just couldn't bring herself to impose on either of her two best friends as one already lived in a tiny apartment and one had a large family. So, her idea of getting by during the remodeling was to live in a tent and support herself with her cleaning job. After a few days of living in the tent she discovers a house in the nearby area. Shigure Sohma (the owner of the house) and Yuki Sohma (Tohru's classmate from school) find her and her tent later that night. They bring her up to their house and after hearing her story she requests that she be able to rent the bit of land her tent is located on until she can go home. This, of course, is unaccetable. Especially after a landslide covered her tent. Shigure offers her a room in his house in exchange for Tohru handling the cooking and housekeeping. She accepts despite still feeling that she's imposing, but she promises to work very hard and is extremely grateful to the Sohmas. The next morning as Yuki is showing Tohru her room, Kyo Sohma bursts in through the roof and demands Yuki fight him. Startled, Tohru tries to stop the fight by grabbing Kyo from behind. Affected by the hug of sorts, he turns into a cat. Tohru starts spazzing out and tries to run downstairs to call the doctor but trips (she's quite clumsy) and falls right onto Shigure and Yuki who were watching. They transform as well and Tohru spazzes out some more. She grabs them all and runs downstairs but after Shigure, as a dog, pays for the take-out delivery that came to the door in the meantime, Tohru slows down and tries to figure things out. But then Kyo starts talking (which startles Tohru all over again) and Shigure explains the curse that the three of them are affected by. Thirteen of the Sohmas are possesed by vengeful spirits of the Chinese Zodiac. Shigure explains that whenever they are weak and or are hugged by members of the opposite sex, they transform into their zodiac animal. Tohru is surprisingly (for the zodiac members at least) not disturbed by this. She's sad that they are cursed but she's not replused by it. Shortly after, they change back and Tohru swears that she'll never tell a soul. Amazingly, her continued (and eventually permanent residence) at Shigure's house is permitted by the mysterious head of family, Akito Sohma. A good example of Tohru's innocence and simplicity (or ditzyness =P) must be the scene at New Year's. New Year's is a huge deal for the Sohma's, especially the ones of the zodiac, and Tohru convinces Kyo and Yuki to go to the Sohma estate and spend New Year's with their families. She thinks it'd be a shame if they missed out on the holidays with their families just because of her, even though that would mean she'd spend her first New Years without her mother all alone in Shigure's house. Kyo and Yuki agree to go but only because they don't realize the implications of it for Tohru. On the walk over, in an attempt to guilt trip Kyo and Yuki, Shigure worries aloud about Tohru and mentions something about a burglar around the area. Kyo and Yuki then recount several instances where Tohru was clumsy (falling down the stairs, walking into walls, leaving her window wide open) and then specualte what would happen if the burglar went to their house. "She's just naive enough to invite a burglar inside! She'd probably serve him tea and ask him questions about himself!" This probably isn't too far from the truth. Tohru's also very caring and takes illness very seriously (especially fevers). When she was young, even before she can remember, her father fell ill with a fever and eventually died from the pneumonia that it turned into. As such, she's always overreacting (in a good way) and insisting that people take care of themselves and rest when they are feeling under the weather. Ironically, she never applies this to herself. Motivated by the thought that she always has to work hard, she sometimes pushes herself too hard and falls ill. Although it'd make more sense to rest, she still tries to work even when she's sick. A big turning point for Tohru has to be when Shishou reveals Kyo's true form. It's a terrifying creature and even though she's incredibly scared, she chases after him when he runs off. After finding him, she still stays, showing great determination, even when Kyo attacks her in an attempt to drive her off. She then tells Kyo that she wants him to stay and wants to go on living together. She chides herself for being selfish like that but remebers that Kyo had once told her that it was alright for her to be selfish once in awhile. The way Tohru is now was heavily influenced by her parents. For the most part it's her mother's influence, but from her father she did pick up her very polite speech. Her work ethic is probably the most notable thing Tohru has gotten from her mother. Since leaving her gang, Tohru's mom worked very hard to support her family (holding down two jobs) and regretted not obtaining a good education. Tohru certainly picks up these traits. She's always pushing herself to do well with whatever is set before her and continues high school even though she finds it quite hard and would rather just go ahead and get a job if not for her promise to her mother. At first Tohru doesn't really understand the curse and takes it kind of lightly. This changes when she meats Akito though. On her first meeting with him, she gets her first glimpse of the affect Akito has on the other zodiac members. Yuki comes to check on Tohru after hearing that Akito was at the school and as Akito is talking to him he's filled with fear. Tohru notices and reacts by pushing Akito away from him. Her second encounter with him is much more eventful. In between these two meetings, Tohru is beginning to wonder more and more about the curse and what it means. Upon meeting him again, she realizes. Akito is God to those in the zodiac and the future he describes of everyone confined and unchanging frightens her. The curse is a sacred bond between god and the zodiac and Tohru finally realizes the implications of it. Despite knowing that she'd deserve to be punished for such a thing, it's now that Tohru makes up her mind and decides that she wants to protect everyone and break the curse. |
